Maxwell, Ruckle Park and the Menhinick First Nations Reserve with their majestic fir and cedar trees, arbutus groves and stunning seascapes. We plan the shoreline excursions to facilitate optimum intertidal exploration and mountain hikes for the warmer times of the day. Whether complete novices or seasoned paddlers, the Kayak Expedition Camp is designed to introduce and enhance individual knowledge of kayak strokes, rescues, and navigation, and to foster competent camping skills. Campers will undoubtedly develop a deeper respect for the natural environment they play in while also establishing new friendships, some of which may last a lifetime. This camp is fun, educational, interesting and at times, moderately challenging, as campers learn to be more proficient paddlers.
The first two nights of camp are spent at beautiful oceanfront Ruckle Provincial Park while the days are based out of our location on Cusheon Lake. Here we teach fundamental and advanced kayak skills including Covid-safe rescues, in order to ensure the group is well prepared for their upcoming 5 day expedition. Campers will enjoy some free time on this lovely freshwater lake, for swimming, stand-up paddle boarding, canoeing and playing around in various other self propelled watercraft.
Depending on weather and the group’s paddling stamina, each day of the expedition we will set up camp at a new location which may include Sansum Narrows, Wallace and Portland Islands, Dionisio on Galiano and Pirates Cove on Decourcy. The scenery in this area of the Gulf Islands is spectacular and the marine environment rich with wildlife, seabirds and intertidal species.

Leadership Camp is recommended for students who have previously taken our Overnight Kayak Camp or have gained sufficient kayak skills at other camps and courses.
With a fully expedition-based itinerary, this program requires greater exertion for the longer distances and days of paddling. Students will assist our most highly certified guides with coordinating meals, food packing and route planning. They will learn more about navigation and how to efficiently and conscientiously set up and take down camp each day.
Leadership Camp’s paddling route will be along the upper west coast of Vancouver Island. There will be one full day's training on Salt Spring prior to leaving for Tahsis where we will paddle out the Tahsis inlet and into the Nuchatlitz Islands. We will navigate and explore this northwest coastline of Vancouver Island up toward Catala Island and moving north towards Rugged Point.
There is leadership learning through scenarios that help students to make quick decisions in supervised incidents. The experience of taking on leadership roles, decision making and practicing outdoor skills, will make them safe and efficient while kayaking on this stunning area of the West Coast. We teach survival skills and no trace camping techniques, always striving to leave our campsites cleaner than we found them.
This camp combines hands-on learning with a more in depth exploration of diverse marine ecosystems. While paddling through these island groups, there will be multiple opportunities to view marine mammals including seals, sea lions, porpoise, grey and humpback whales and possibly orcas.
Our goal is to educate these leaders of tomorrow about how interconnected we are with each other and the natural environment we are paddling. We look at the delicate balance necessary to keep these essential elements healthy and working well together; the importance of treating Mother Nature with reverence and respect for a viable future.
Leadership Campers will have an opportunity to learn from our Online Campus prior to the onset of camp so that they can view strokes and rescues including video footage, and learn tide and current calculations before arrival.

Surf Camp is now 7 Days and Six nights, from Sunday to Saturday.
Suitable for beginner and experienced surfers alike, this program is a perfect mix of surfing and surf lessons, camping, hiking and a whole lot of West Coast fun!
After arriving on Salt Spring Island on the first day of camp, we travel to Pacific Rim National Park on Vancouver Island’s West Coast. Our base at the Ucluelet campground offers choice amenities, including a hot tub & sauna; (unfortunately, these may not be available if Covid 19 is still a reality). Our talented team of instructors kicks off the program with an introduction to fundamental surf skills at one of the stellar beach locations between Ucluelet and Long Beach.
After the first day, campers will surf twice daily to develop their individual skill sets as they tackle waves big and small. Two instructors are in the water at all times teaching and assisting on surf fundamentals and advanced manoeuvres. We surf at a different beach location daily depending on swell, tide and winds. On the last surf day and second last day of camp, we culminate with a friendly surf competition where everyone can excel and have fun.
All surf gear is provided including both short and long boards, wetsuits and skimboards. This 7 day program can be combined with a Kayak Camp for a two week Kayak & Surf Program.
